A new national survey, commissioned by Trusted Housesitters, finds 61% of Americans worry more about the well-being of the pets they leave behind than their own vacation adventures. Sixteen percent will happily spend more to bring their animals with them on vacation, if they can find pet-friendly accommodations.

It wasn't that long ago that the only way you could take your four-legged family members with you on vacation was to use an RV or road trip and camp out. But as more and more pet owners drive changes in the tourism industry, additional doors and even quite a few portcullises are opening for dogs.

The Trusted Housesitters survey notes 56% of pet owners travel less since getting a pet. And during COVID, a lot of people got pets. When borders opened up, the spike in revenge travel came with a caveat.

One in five of those surveyed still choose road trips over flights so their animals can come along. But that's not adventurous enough for many. They want to see the world, and remarkably, castles that have stood for centuries are welcoming the challenge.

That's good news for pet owners who are also getting into the castlecore travel trend. Not surprising as one of the chief drivers of castlecore is the Netflix show "Bridgerton," where Queen Charlotte's pomeranians are part of her entourage, and we often see heroine Kate Sharma with her beloved corgi, Newton.

A poll conducted in the British Isles confirms 52% of pet owners will only stay at pet-friendly properties. Thankfully, there are more and more of these every day.

The hardest part of traveling to Europe with your dog is getting there. Check with your airline, as they all have slightly different rules. Many will limit the number of pets on a flight and require they fit in a closed pet travel bag or kennel with a maximum of 18 x 11 x 9 inches and fit underneath the seat in front of you.

You'll need an Animal Health Certificate issued within 10 days of your travel date, and at least 21 days after your dog's most recent rabies vaccination date. For Ireland specifically, dogs must be treated for tapeworms by an Accredited Veterinarian one to five days before they arrive.

Forty-five minutes from the Dublin Airport, Kilkea Castle treats pets like royalty, offering canine travel companions all-natural doggy treats, comfortable dog beds and silver bowls from which to drink and eat. The award-winning hotel resort and golf club has a variety of options for those who want to kick back with their dogs, including a Deluxe or Superior Lodge Bedroom or a Three-Bedroom Self-Catering Lodge.

The 180-acre estate also offers plenty of outdoor dog-friendly destinations and activities, like Oak Park Forest Park, Milford Weir and Emo Park. In the nearby town of Castledermot, people and their pets can explore the medieval walled town, the Franciscan friary, priory and St. James Church and graveyard. Spooky.

Kim Fitzsimons visited the castle with her pooch Milo. She points out, "He loved taking long walks on the grounds of Kilkea, from the main castle through to the local Mullaghreelan Woods, which you can access via our Woodland walk. He really enjoyed discovering the Motte and Bailey, the oldest part of the castle grounds, from 1180. It was like we had the place entirely to ourselves, so quiet and peaceful, perfect for spending time with your dog."

Dogs on a lead are allowed in the atmospheric ruins of Ludlow Castle. The location also boasts dog-friendly tearooms and pet watering stations around the castle. Dogs are not only welcomed into Eastnor Castle, but it also includes a dedicated Dogs-Off-Leads area.

The 4,000-year-old Beeston Castle has incredible views across miles of landscape, a 40-acre woodland park, and the castle well is thought to be the place where Richard II hid his wealth of gold coins prior to leaving England for Ireland. They've never been found.

Powderham Castle has been transformed into a family home. Dogs are allowed to accompany their humans on a guided tour of the centuries-old, stunning interior, the picturesque Rose Garden and the American Garden.

Climb to the top of Totnes Castle and drink in the beautiful views of the town. Dogs are always welcome at Castle Sween, thought to be the oldest on the Scottish mainland.

The ruins of Dunnottar Castle are open to dogs, wild and haunting, and surrounded on three sides by the sea. It's been featured in several Hollywood movies: "Victor Frankenstein" in 2015, Mel Gibson's "Hamlet" in 1990 and "Mary Queen of Scots" in 2013.

The French are very dog friendly. Canine companions are welcome in many public spaces, whether shopping or dining, and at several historical locations throughout the country. Just be sure to observe any warnings to avoid an unfortunate incident. Be on the lookout for signs that read "Buvette pour Toutou," as these indicate pet-friendly watering spots. Be aware certain breeds of dogs must wear a muzzle and be on a leash in public places in France.

Located in the heart of the Loire Valley, Château de Candes is classified as one of the 156 most beautiful villages of France. It has several buildings of historical note and features an art park that ends at the next village, Montsoreau, which boasts a large antique fair. The chateau garden and park offer a beautiful view of the confluence where the Loire and Vienne rivers meet.

Allegra Peardon, owner of Mercuria Charms, brought her dog Badger on a recent trip and shares, "There were so many things that made the trip to Château de Candes especially nice for Badger. One of the real perks was that it is completely fenced in, so we didn't have to worry about him getting out onto the road … (he) was able to explore not only the yards and courtyard, but also the gardens and art park, which is huge. He especially liked the ancient arena, which no one really knows what it was used for, but it is beautiful and hidden in the middle of the wooded area."

Château de Chissay, in Chissay-en-Touraine, also welcomes dogs, for a fee of €15 per day. However, they may not join their owners in the restaurant.

Jennifer Dombrowski, publisher of Luxe Adventure Traveler, is an American expat who's lived in Europe with her dogs since 2009. "Exploring Europe with your dog is a special experience as many attractions like castles, some small museums and a lot of other experiences welcome dogs, unlike in the U.S.," she explains. She has visited a number of dog-friendly castles with her dogs, but highlights her favorite.

"We loved staying in such a beautiful castle with views of the Rhine and two other castles on the opposite bank of the Rhine River. There are also the ruins of Burg Rheinfels, a mighty fortress that is the largest and most imposing on the Rhine." Dombrowski adds, "Both you and your dog are welcome to explore the ruins."

The Romantik Hotel Schloss Rheinfels sits on the Rhine River, in the heart of the UNESCO Middle Rhine Valley, and directly across from the legendary "Loreleyfelsen," or rock of Loreley. A beautiful four-star hotel, it was restored and brought up to date, with exquisite antiques, stylish paintings, noble materials and details kept to preserve the medieval setting. Dogs are welcome everywhere except the spa and restaurant.

Many of the castle and ruins sites in Germany permit dogs to explore the grounds with their humans, as long as they're kept on a leash. Notably, Burgfeste Dilsberg, Burg Hirschhorn and Schloss Heinsheim allow dogs in the buildings. The latter two have been converted to dog-friendly hotels.

In 2022, travel and dog influencers who post under the name HelloItsJasper on Instagram shared their list of Castles that allow dogs inside, on a leash. They include Burg Rheinstein, Reichsburg Castle, Burg Satzvey, Schloss Lichtenstein and the Linderhof Palace. Several others allow dogs on the grounds, but not inside, including some of the most famous castles in Germany, Hohenschwangau, Mespelbrunn, Neuschwanstein and Heidelberg Castle.

With a leash, your dog can tour the Prague Castle courtyards. Animals are restricted from entering St. Vitus Cathedral, but you can see much of the historical building from the courtyards.

El Castillo de Buen Amor in Salamanca, Spain, is not completely pet friendly, but the rooms on the outside walls are open to travellers with pets. For an extra €30 per day, dogs can stay at Castel Monastero in Tuscany, Italy. They just cannot enter the Spa and restaurants.

Jasper's owners also recommend Jaunpils Castle in Latvia. They boast dog-friendly rooms, live music, traditional Latvian meals and family-oriented excursions and tours.

While it might take some work and paperwork to get your pooch overseas, once you arrive, there is plenty for them to do and see. Just remember, as exciting as sniffing new places and looking at ruins can be, they need to exercise too. Plan a little extra time to do doggy things with your pets while on holiday. The appreciation they'll show is beyond words.

Coffee hasn’t always been an easy sell in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Coffee hasn't always been an easy sell in Nepal.

The Himalayan country is a major tea producer, as well as a major consumer. When people greet each other in the morning, they don't ask “how are you.” They say “have you had your tea?”

Tea — usually served with as a sweet, milky beverage in a piping hot glass tumbler — is as much a part of Nepal's culture as rice, a constant presence at homes, meetings and social gatherings.

But a growing number of Nepalis are warming up to coffee, as trendy cafes spring up street corners in cities and towns across the country.

Nepalis started trying coffee in the 90s

One cafe in the capital, Kathmandu, is widely seen as the pioneer.

Gagan Pradhan began Himalayan Java as a single cafe in an alley, and it's grown to a chain with 84 locations the country. Pradhan estimates there around 7,000 cafes across the country, although so far international brands like Starbucks aren't in Nepal.

“There are lot of tea shops throughout the nation, but the kind of set up they have is still kind of old fashioned,” Pradhan said. “I think with investors and people like us, when it comes to coffee shop we are more serious not only with machines, we are serious with everything like the lighting, the set up, the furnishings, the location.”

Pradhan said tea shops usually offer just black tea or tea with milk, whereas a typical coffee menu has 10-15 hot beverages and about 10-15 cold beverages, he said.

Pradhan said it’s an appealing business because the initial investment to open a cafe is very low, they’re clean and simple enough for a single to family to run, and customers are willing to pay more for coffee.

Several of eastern Nepal’s tea plantations in the mountains of east Nepal, famous for the tea, are joined by coffee plantations now.

Coffee is expensive, but it's a lifestyle

Nepal is part of a regional trend. Coffee consumption has soared across traditionally tea-drinking countries in Asia as members of growing middle classes seek out novel flavors and adopt international trends.

Coffee is a premium drink in Nepal: it costs about $2 at Himalayan Java, which is enough to buy a meal at a local cafe in Kathmandu, or five cups of tea. Still, cafes bustle with officers workers on breaks and students looking for places to study.

“I think the idea of drinking coffee (in Nepal) was first triggered with people thinking it would elevate their standard of living, but then once they tasted coffee many people just liked it and continued to drink it,” said Deep Singh Bandari, a social worker who is a regular visitor to the coffee cafes.

Nepal is starting to produce coffee too

Most of the coffee drunk in Nepal is imported, but in the country's famous eastern tea-growing regions coffee plantations are springing up.

According to Nepal’s National Tea and Coffee Development Board, about 400 tons of coffee was produced in fiscal year 2021-22, the most recent for which data is available. That's a drop in the percolator compared to the 26,000 tons of tea produced the same year, but the board predicts rapid growth.

“Both young and old people in Nepal just love coffee, and the number of coffee drinkers is growing every day. This trend is just going to grow,” said Pradhan.

Lawmakers on Maui have passed legislation aimed at eliminating a large percentage of the Hawaiian island’s vacation rentals

HONOLULU (AP) — Lawmakers on Maui passed legislation Thursday aimed at eliminating a large percentage of the Hawaiian island's vacation rentals to address a housing shortage exacerbated by the wildfire that destroyed most of Lahaina two years ago.

It's the latest action by a top global tourist destination to push back against the infiltration of vacationers into residential neighborhoods and tourism overwhelming their communities. In May, Spain ordered Airbnb to block more than 65,000 holiday listings on its platform for having violated rules. Last month, thousands of protesters in European cities like Barcelona and Venice, Italy, marched against the ills of overtourism.

The Maui County Council's housing committee voted 6-3 to pass the bill, which would close a loophole that has allowed owners of condos in apartment zones to rent their units for days or weeks at a time instead of a minimum of 180 days. The mandate would take effect in the West Maui district that includes Lahaina in 2028. The rest of the county would have until 2030 to comply.

The council still needs to vote on the bill, but the committee's result is a strong indication of the final outcome because all nine council members sit on the housing panel. The mayor is expected to sign the bill, which he proposed.

"Bill 9 is a critical first step in restoring our commitment to prioritize housing for local residents — and securing a future where our keiki can live, grow, and thrive in the place they call home,” Maui Mayor Richard Bissen said in a statement, using the Hawaiian word for children.

Vacation rentals take up one-fifth of Maui's housing

Vacation rentals currently account for 21% of all housing in the county, which has a population of about 165,000 people.

An analysis by University of Hawaii economists predicted the measure would add 6,127 units to Maui’s long-term housing stock, increasing supply by 13%.

Opponents questioned whether local residents could afford the condos in question, noting that many of the buildings they are in are aging and their units come with high mortgages, insurance payments, maintenance and special assessment costs.

Alicia Humiston said her condo is in a hotel zone so it won't be affected. But she predicted the measure will hurt housekeepers, plumbers, electricians and other small business owners who help maintain vacation rentals.

“It’s not what’s best for the the community,” said Humiston, who is president of the Rentals by Owner Awareness Association.

Bissen proposed the legislation last year after wildfire survivors and activists camped out on a beach popular with tourists to demand change.

Mayor says tourism will continue but must not ‘hollow out our neighborhoods’

The University of Hawaii study said only about 600 new housing units are built in the county each year so converting the vacation rentals would be equivalent to a decade’s worth of new housing development. Condo prices would drop 20-40%, the study estimated.

The report also predicted one-quarter of Maui County’s visitor accommodations would vanish and visitor spending would sink 15%. It estimated gross domestic product would contract by 4%.

The mayor said such economic analysis failed to tell a full story, noting families are torn apart when high housing costs drive out relatives and that cultural knowledge disappears when generations leave Maui.

The mayor told the council the bill was one part of a broader housing strategy that would include building new housing, investing in infrastructure and stopping illegally operated vacation rentals. He said there were limits to how much new housing could be built because of constraints on water supplies and sewer infrastructure.

Tourism would continue on Maui but must do so in a way “that doesn't hollow out our neighborhoods,” the mayor said.

The mayor's staff told council members that visitor spending would decline with the measure but most of the drop would be on lodging. Because 94% of those who own vacation rentals in apartment zones don't live on Maui, they said much of this income already flows off-island. They predicted the county budget could withstand an estimated $61 million decline in annual tax revenue resulting from the measure.

A laundry-stealing cat with expensive taste has puzzled and delighted a neighborhood in Auckland, New Zealand, by committing an unstoppable wave of burglaries from clotheslines and even bedrooms

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Most cat owners dread their pets bringing home mice or birds. But for the owners of one felonious feline in Auckland, New Zealand, there’s a worse shame — being the unwitting accomplice to an unstoppable one-cat crimewave.

His prolific laundry-pinching from clotheslines and bedrooms in the placid beachside neighborhood of Mairangi Bay has turned 15-month-old Leo into a local celebrity and earned him a new moniker. He now goes by Leonardo da Pinchy.

And he’s got expensive taste. His frequent hauls include silk boxer shorts, thick men’s work socks — preferably with clothespins still attached — and in one mortifying episode for his humans, a brand-new 300 New Zealand dollar ($181) cashmere sweater.

“My daughter was at home sick and she rang me at work saying, ’It’s bad, it’s bad, this is the worst thing he’s brought in, it’s really bad,” said Leo’s owner, Helen North. “Because it was beautiful. I was like, ‘Ooh, can I keep that?’ But I couldn’t.”

Instead, North turned to a neighborhood WhatsApp group to return Leo’s stolen goods to their rightful owners. Her usual message: “Are these your undies?”

But the pilfered stash kept piling up: socks (piles), underwear (loads) and even a 5-foot-long stuffed snake (bizarre). On one record-setting day, Leo returned with nine items, enough for a full outfit if you didn’t mind a mix of everything from baby clothes to menswear.

“He brought in a jersey this morning at 10 past 8,” North said. “The shops hadn’t even opened.”

With dozens of items unclaimed, the embarrassed owner took her search for Leo’s victims wider this month, posting photos of his hauls on a local Facebook page along with an apology and her address. Those who showed up to claim their belongings included a woman who recognized her pink and purple underpants and a boy whose beloved and missing sports jersey was helpfully identifiable by his name printed on the back.

The ire North expected over Leo's cat burgling antics didn’t eventuate — although one of his targets, who is allergic to cats, now dries her laundry indoors.

“All of our neighbors think he’s amazing,” she said. “Some of them are quite put out that he hasn’t actually stolen anything of theirs.”

Still, North has tried everything to curb her cat’s laundry obsession, from attempting to keep him indoors to leaving out clothes at home for him to steal. No luck.

“He only wants stuff that he shouldn’t have,” she said, adding that she was also unwilling to risk an online suggestion that Leo simply needed another playmate.

“He might teach another cat to do this,” North said.

Leo's life of crime began when he was first allowed outdoors a year ago. But his family hopes it’s just a juvenile phase.

“I hope he grows out of it because I don’t want to do this for like, 15 years,” North said. “This is a lot of admin.”

For now, on the streets of Mairangi Bay, Leonardo da Pinchy remains at large.

The cruel heat is back as southern Europe slips deeper into summer

Cruel heat is baking southern Europe as the continent slips deeper into summer.

In homes and offices, air conditioning is sweet relief. But under the scorching sun, outdoor labor can be grueling, brutal, occasionally even deadly.

A street sweeper died in Barcelona during a heat wave last month and, according to a labor union, 12 other city cleaners have suffered heatstroke since. Some of Europe's powerful unions are pushing for tougher regulations to protect the aging workforce from climate change on the world's fastest-warming continent.

Cleaning the hot streets

Hundreds of street cleaners and concerned citizens marched through downtown Barcelona last week to protest the death of Montse Aguilar, a 51-year-old street cleaner who worked even as the city's temperatures hit a June record.

Fellow street sweeper Antonia Rodríguez said at the protest that blistering summers have made her work “unbearable.”

“I have been doing this job for 23 years and each year the heat is worse,” said Rodríguez, 56. “Something has to be done.”

Extreme heat has fueled more than 1,000 excess deaths in Spain so far in June and July, according to the Carlos III Health Institute.

“Climate change is, above all, playing a role in extreme weather events like the heat waves we are experiencing, and is having a big impact in our country,” said Diana Gómez, who heads the institute’s daily mortality observatory.

Even before the march, Barcelona’s City Hall issued new rules requiring the four companies contracted to clean its streets to give workers uniforms made of breathable material, a hat and sun cream. When temperatures reach 34 C (93 F), street cleaners now must have hourly water breaks and routes that allow time in the shade. Cleaning work will be suspended when temperatures hit 40 C (104 F).

Protesters said none of the clothing changes have been put into effect and workers are punished for allegedly slacking in the heat. They said supervisors would sanction workers when they took breaks or slowed down.

Workers marched behind a banner reading “Extreme Heat Is Also Workplace Violence!" and demanded better summer clothing and more breaks during the sweltering summers. They complained that they have to buy their own water.

FCC Medio Ambiente, the company that employed the deceased worker, declined to comment on the protesters' complaints. In a previous statement, it offered its condolences to Aguilar's family and said that it trains its staff to work in hot weather.

Emergency measures and a Greek cook

In Greece, regulations for outdoor labor such as construction work and food delivery includes mandatory breaks. Employers are also advised — but not mandated — to adjust shifts to keep workers out of the midday sun.

Greece requires heat-safety inspections during hotter months but the country's largest labor union, the GSEE, is calling for year-round monitoring.

European labor unions and the United Nations’ International Labor Organization are also pushing for a more coordinated international approach to handling the impact of rising temperatures on workers.

"Heat stress is an invisible killer,” the ILO said in a report last year on how heat hurts workers.

It called for countries to increase worker heat protections, saying Europe and Central Asia have experienced the largest spike in excessive worker heat exposure this century.

In Athens, grill cook Thomas Siamandas shaves meat from a spit in the threshold of the famed Bairaktaris Restaurant. He is out of the sun, but the 38 C (100.4 F) temperature recorded on July 16 was even tougher to endure while standing in front of souvlaki burners.

Grill cooks step into air-conditioned rooms when possible and always keep water within reach. Working with a fan pointed at his feet, the 32-year-old said staying cool means knowing when to take a break, before the heat overwhelms you.

“It’s tough, but we take precautions: We sit down when we can, take frequent breaks and stay hydrated. We drink plenty of water — really a lot,” said Siamandas, who has worked at the restaurant for eight years. “You have to find a way to adjust to the conditions.”

The blazing sun in Rome

Massimo De Filippis spends hours in the blazing sun each day sharing the history of vestal virgins, dueling gladiators and powerful emperors as tourists shuffle through Rome’s Colosseum and Forum.

“Honestly, it is tough. I am not going to lie,” the 45-year-old De Filippis said as he wiped sweat from his face. “Many times it is actually dangerous to go into the Roman Forum between noon and 3:30 p.m.”

At midday on July 22, he led his group down the Forum’s Via Sacra, the central road in ancient Rome. They paused at a fountain to rinse their faces and fill their bottles.

Dehydrated tourists often pass out here in the summer heat, said Francesca Duimich, who represents 300 Roman tour guides in Italy’s national federation, Federagit.

“The Forum is a pit; There is no shade, there is no wind,” Duimich said. “Being there at 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. in the summer heat means you will feel unwell.”

This year, guides have bombarded her with complaints about the heat. In recent weeks, Federagit requested that the state’s Colosseum Archaeological Park, which oversees the Forum, open an hour earlier so tours can get a jump-start before the heat becomes punishing. The request has been to no avail, so far.

The park’s press office said that administrators are working to move the opening up by 30 minutes and will soon schedule visits after sunset.

In May 2025 alone, the Autonomous Region of Madeira welcomed more than 235,000 guests, signaling its growing appeal to international tourists. With ancient forests to explore, Atlantic-front hiking trails to conquer and cliffside cuisine to savor, I would trade my ticket to Hawaii and go back to Madeira with no hesitation.

When I visited Madeira, I drove along winding coastal roads and hiked up rugged mountains. Here's where the real adventure begins, because Madeira rewards short stays with outsized spectacle, flavor and ease.

Madeira is an easy island getaway

Madeira continues to attract travelers seeking a well-rounded island escape that's packed with culture, nature and convenience. If you're drawn to its temperate climate, dramatic scenery or the ease of access from major European destinations, Madeira is a short plane trip within the region. For American travelers, direct flights from Newark now make the journey shorter and simpler, especially for those on the East Coast.

Year‑round spring climate

Madeira's nickname, the Island of Eternal Spring, refers to its year-round mild weather and dependable climate that travelers can count on. Thanks to its North Atlantic location, Madeira enjoys a consistently pleasant atmosphere throughout the year, with average temperatures ranging from 64 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. It avoids extreme heat and is outside the hurricane belt entirely, making it a reliable choice for every season and perfect for reducing your packing checklist.

This kind of reliability continues to draw more travelers year after year, especially Americans. In May 2025 alone, Madeira recorded more than 1.15 million overnight stays, highlighting the island's popularity among travelers seeking adventure and relaxation. These increases, up 7.8% from the previous year, indicate a desire for destinations that combine natural beauty with consistent, stress-free experiences, such as Madeira.

Volcanic landscapes and lush laurissilva

Madeira's topography is shaped by jagged cliffs, steep ridgelines and dramatic elevation changes carved by volcanic activity. These features make the island a dream for hikers and sightseers, especially those eager to explore it on foot. I recommend bringing good walking shoes if you want to explore the rugged landscape.

Take a drive inland as I did, where winding mountain roads lead through terraced fields and quiet villages. These routes gradually ascend to panoramic lookouts like Cabo Girão, the highest sea cliff in Europe and a popular spot for glass-floored skywalk views.

Laurisilva Forest is equally captivating. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last surviving laurel forests in the world. Spanning about 20% of Madeira's landmass, this ancient ecosystem dates back to the Tertiary period and thrives in the island's humid, subtropical climate. Its misty canopy and constantly moist forest floor provide a haven for rare species such as the Madeira firecrest and the long-toed pigeon.

Valleys, viewpoints and village traditions

When I ventured further inland, I followed narrow mountain roads that led to some of Madeira's most surprising treasures. I spent my morning walking around Curral das Freiras, a hidden village nestled deep within a valley that resembles a volcanic crater, once used by nuns seeking refuge from pirate attacks. Then I headed to the nearby Boca dos Namorados Viewpoint, where I took in wide-ranging views across the surrounding cliffs and valley below.

Looking to explore even farther beyond the scenic viewpoints, I wandered onto an off-road trail that offers a complete nature experience, where the island's rugged beauty is at its most raw. Midway through, I stopped at a rustic bar for a poncha tasting, sampling Madeira's famous regional drink traditionally served in typical local taverns. Of course, I had to have my coffee to go with it.
